Where you start
Southern end of Mungo Brush / bar gate (confirm on NPWS)
Public park materials describe a start from the bar gate at the southern end of Mungo Brush, wandering through cabbage tree palm forest toward the old fishing village of Tamboi, with boardwalk options toward Brambles Green. Confirm the signed start and current notes on the official Tamboi walking track page before you go.
How to get there
- Same Mungo Brush / Bombah Broadwater access as the rainforest loop: Tea Gardens / Hawks Nest approach from the Pacific Highway.
- Vehicle entry fee applies (Day Pass or Annual Pass — official $8/vehicle/day as of 12 Aug 2026; re-check).
- Park at signed Mungo Brush day-use / campground nodes; do not block gates or emergency access.
- Ferry logistics are separate if you arrived via Bombah Point — cash only, 8am–6pm, wind closures possible.
How to do it (step by step)
- Orient at Mungo Brush: toilets, water top-up if available, day pass sorted.
- If new to the precinct, the short Mungo Rainforest loop is a safer first product; then decide if Tamboi kilometres still fit.
- Follow signed Tamboi track notes. Stay on formed track and boardwalks — soft lake edges and mud after rain.
- Turn around with daylight and energy spare; one-way brochure distance does not include your return if you reverse.
- Optional boardwalk / Brambles Green links only if signed and open — do not invent bush-bash shortcuts.
Who this walk is for
Choose Tamboi when you have already sorted Mungo Brush logistics and want more than the 1.5 km rainforest loop without committing to the full Grade 4 Mungo walking track. It suits walkers who like forest and river-edge character and can manage a longer easy–moderate outing.
Park brochure materials describe about 4 km one-way from the southern end of Mungo Brush through cabbage tree palm forest toward the old fishing village of Tamboi. Treat that as planning only — verify live signed distance, grade and status on the official NPWS track page.
If the group is already tired after a hard headland, skip Tamboi. If the group only wants a 20-minute canopy loop, stick to Mungo Rainforest.
What to expect
Forest and Myall River precinct character, with possible boardwalk links toward Brambles Green where signed. Soft ground after rain is normal. You may share the area with paddlers and campers — it is not a remote alpine track.
Still confirm open/closed notes on the official Tamboi walking track page. Temporary works, flood effects and diversions happen.
Logistics
Same fee rules as the rest of the park: day vehicle entry separate from camping and from any ferry cash. Annual passes do not cover camping.
One-way brochure distances need a return plan. If you walk out 4 km and reverse, budget the full return time and water.
Limited reception: screenshot maps and alerts before you leave gateway towns.
Packing baseline
Water, insect repellent, sun kit for open patches, grip shoes, offline notes. Same reverse rules as other Mungo walks: heat distress, injury, or rising weather ends the day early.
What to pair
Natural pair: Mungo Rainforest loop first, then Tamboi if energy remains. Lake paddle later only if wind and boat traffic allow. Not Yacaaba Grade 4 on the same day for first-timers.
If you still need sun kit, water or grip shoes after this walk plan, use the gear and packing lists — Amazon searches live there, not on trail pages.

Extra tips
- Good second walk on a camp day when you do not want a full headland.
- Palm forest shade helps in heat — still carry water.
- Historic village site is context, not a theme park — leave artefacts and fabric alone.
- Pair with lake edge time, not Seal Rocks the same afternoon by default.
Often paired with Mungo Rainforest— only if energy and weather allow.
