This is the classic first Myall Lakes day for visitors who want lakes plus a real short walk without trying Seal Rocks, The Grandis and the ferry all in one day. One solid Mungo Brush day is enough.
Say no early if the day is already full. If the campground is chaotic, still do the rainforest loop and lake edge — do not “save” the day with a late highway dash to Sugarloaf Point.
Always check local alerts and the official Myall Lakes National Park page the morning you leave. Distances, fees and open paths change — this itinerary is planning guidance only.
Vehicle entry is listed at $8 per vehicle per day on the official park page (re-checked 12 Aug 2026 — re-check live). Camping fees are separate. Ferry is separate if you use it. No pets except certified assistance animals. Traditional Custodians: Worimi people. Land manager: NPWS NSW.
Limited mobile reception is normal in the park. Install Emergency+, save offline maps and tell someone your plan before you leave Tea Gardens / Hawks Nest reception.
Track status, weather and closures change — verify on NSW National Parks before you leave, then use the timeline below as a planning skeleton only.
Timeline
Night before
Pick one main plan for the day
Primary plan = Mungo Rainforest walk + lake edge. Optional B only = Tamboi link if energy remains. Pack water, sun kit, insect repellent, Emergency+ installed, offline alerts screenshot. Set a hard “on the highway by” time. Do not schedule Seal Rocks or The Grandis as “if we have time.”
0:00–0:40
Town stop and entry fee
Tea Gardens / Hawks Nest for fuel and toilets if needed. Enter Mungo Brush precinct; pay or display vehicle day pass as required (card machine, area office, or Park’nPay — re-check live). Valuables not left visible. Toilets before the loop if available.
0:40–1:40
Mungo Rainforest walk
Northern end of Mungo Brush campground. Official figures: ~1.5 km loop, Grade 3, 15–45 minutes when open — re-check status. Stay on track. Dees Corner campground was not listed closed on NPWS local alerts (checked 3 Oct 2026) — still confirm live status before treating that side track as a camp add-on. Hold children near vehicle traffic at the start.
1:40–3:30
Lake edge / picnic / optional Tamboi
Calm water time, shade, kids can wind down. Optional short Tamboi walking track only if heat and energy still work (brochure materials describe ~4 km one-way toward Tamboi — verify live and budget return time). Reverse early if anyone is exhausted.
3:30–4:30
Buffer and decision gate
Check the least energetic person. If the group is still strong and daylight remains, a short beach or ramp-side sit is fine. If anyone is cooked, protect the exit — do not invent a second precinct.
4:30+
Leave with time to spare
Do not bolt on Seal Rocks late in the day. Leave early enough for holiday traffic on the Pacific Highway. If camping, book only via NPWS (or 1300 072 757). Note what worked for next time.

Parking & access tips
- Mungo Brush is popular on school holidays — arrive early or accept shared space.
- Pay applicable entry — official list $8/vehicle/day (re-check live); use machine, office or Park’nPay.
- Ferry is optional for a pure Mungo Brush day; do not treat it as mandatory.
- Unsealed approaches can be soft after rain — confirm conditions.
- Never leave bags visible in the car at busy day-use nodes.
Skip if short on time / energy
- Seal Rocks / Sugarloaf Point (real separate drive)
- The Grandis (Bulahdelah-side stop) stacked after a full Mungo day
- Full Mungo walking track (21 km one-way Grade 4)
- Yacaaba Headland Grade 4 after a late start
- Broughton Island (boat only)
- Any “we will just squeeze the ferry too” add-on after 3 pm
Extra tips
Who this plan is for
- First-timers who want one honest Mid-North Coast lake + rainforest day
- Families and mixed groups who will stay on formed tracks
- Campers basing at Mungo Brush with a booked NPWS site
- Visitors happy if lake edge alone becomes the afternoon win in heat
Decision gates (say them out loud)
- If local alerts close the rainforest track: switch to lake edge / open picnic only
- If entry machines fail: follow on-site instructions; have card and cash backup
- If temperature is extreme: shorten the loop, maximise shade, skip Tamboi
- If anyone suggests Seal Rocks after 2 pm: say no
- If ferry “just for fun” appears on the list: drop it — separate fee, hours and wind risk
What success looks like
- Everyone back with water margin and moods intact
- One clear Mungo Rainforest story completed well
- Day entry handled without drama
- Notes for next time: ferry circuit, Seal Rocks ocean day, or Grandis picnic
Communications
- Limited mobile reception is an official planning reality — 000 needs reception
- Install Emergency+ before arrival; screenshot NPWS alerts while you still have signal
- Tell someone your rough plan and return window
Related trail guides
- Mungo Rainforest walkShort coastal rainforest loop from the northern end of Mungo Brush campground — plum pine, mock olive and coogera character that feels nothing like an open beach day. Easy logistics once you are already at Bombah Broadwater; still needs park entry, sensible footwear and a check of local alerts.
- Tamboi walking trackWalking track linking the Mungo Brush system toward the historic fishing village site at Tamboi / Myall River context. Park materials describe an easy walk from the southern end of Mungo Brush through cabbage tree palm forest — still confirm live distance, grade and open status on the official NPWS track page.
