Myall Lakes trails & walks
Guide updated · grades and open status change — verify NSW National Parks
Start with a clear short rainforest loop vs harder headland decision. Mungo Rainforest + one optional beach or lake hour covers most first Mid-North Coast day trips. Distances, grades and times below are planning ranges — always confirm on NSW National Parks and park alerts. Weather, fees, closures and track status change.
How to choose a walk
First visit, mixed group: Mungo Rainforest loop (official ~1.5 km, Grade 3).
Longer forest day at Mungo Brush: Rainforest + optional Tamboi link when energy remains.
Fit headland challenge: Yacaaba (Grade 4, ~7 km return) — half-day walking before buffers.
Ocean / lighthouse day: Treachery Headland + Sugarloaf Point precinct (separate drive from Mungo).
Long coastal endurance: Mungo walking track sections only for prepared walkers (full track ~21 km one-way, Grade 4).
Respectful coastal dunes: Dark Point — stay on signed routes near a significant Aboriginal Place.

Trails FAQ
Tap a question to expand the answer.
What is the best first walk in Myall Lakes National Park?
Most first-timers start with the Mungo Rainforest walk at the northern end of Mungo Brush campground — official figures about 1.5 km loop, Grade 3, 15–45 minutes when open (re-check status). Yacaaba Headland (Grade 4, ~7 km return) and the full Mungo walking track (~21 km one-way, Grade 4) need more fitness and time. Always verify track status with NSW National Parks.
How hard is Yacaaba Headland?
Official NPWS figures (re-checked 12 Aug 2026): about 7 km return, Grade 4, roughly 2.5–3.5 hours when the full track is open. NPWS local alerts (checked 3 Oct 2026) list it open only to a viewing point; beyond that closed for visitor safety. Always re-check distance, grade and open status on the official track page.
Can I do Yacaaba Headland and a full ferry + Seal Rocks day casually?
Usually a bad first-visit plan. A hard headland plus several park areas fills the day before you are done. Pick one main stop per day — or plan a multi-night trip with real rest time.
Is the Mungo walking track the same as the rainforest loop?
No. The rainforest walk is a short ~1.5 km loop at Mungo Brush campground. The Mungo walking track is a long one-way coastal walk (officially about 21 km, Grade 4, 10–12 hours end-to-end). Most visitors only walk a section of the long track. Confirm live notes on NPWS.
Do I need a park pass for day walks?
Vehicle day entry or an annual pass applies for cars (official list $8 per vehicle per day as of 12 Aug 2026 — re-check live). Pay at the Mungo Brush card machine, area office or Park’nPay. Annual passes do not cover camping. Ferry cash is separate if you use Bombah Point ferry.
Is there mobile reception on the tracks?
Limited and patchy — NPWS notes limited mobile reception in Myall Lakes, and you need reception to call 000 on a normal phone. Install Emergency+ and download offline maps before you leave gateway towns.
Where do I verify track status?
Each trail page on this site links the official NPWS track page where available. Also check local Myall Lakes alerts and the main park page. This site is unofficial and does not show live closures.
