Half to full day including drive and heat buffers

Yacaaba Headland half-day (fit walkers)

Best for: Fit walkers wanting a Grade 4 coastal headland challenge

Committed headland day on the Hawks Nest side: official ~7 km return, Grade 4, 2.5–3.5 hours walking — plus real drive, water and reverse rules.

Yacaaba is not the Mungo Rainforest loop. Official NPWS figures (re-checked 12 Aug 2026): about 7 km return, Grade 4, roughly 2.5–3.5 hours — when the full track is open. NPWS local alerts (checked 3 Oct 2026) list the walking track open only to a viewing point; beyond that closed. Screenshot the official track page and local alerts the morning you go.

Skip this plan with toddlers, reluctant walkers, or anyone already exhausted from beach time.

Park entry applies (official $8/vehicle/day list — re-check). Limited reception: Emergency+ and offline notes before you leave town.

Do not stack Seal Rocks or full ferry circuit on the same day for first-timers.

Track status, weather and closures change — verify on NSW National Parks before you leave, then use the timeline below as a planning skeleton only.

Timeline

  1. Night before

    Fitness honesty + turnaround time

Agree a clock-time reverse. Pack 2 L+ water per person, grip shoes, wind shell, sun kit. Screenshot official Yacaaba track page and local alerts.

  2. Morning

    Hawks Nest approach and start

Tea Gardens / Hawks Nest gateway. Pay day entry. Locate signed trailhead per NPWS notes — do not invent a car park from memory.

  3. Walk block

Out and back with reverse rules

Steady climb and headland exposure. Wet rock possible. Turn back for lightning, heat distress, injury, or wind that makes rock sections unsafe. Summit views are optional; walking out as a functional group is not.

  4. Afternoon

    Recovery only

Village food and shade. Optional calm lake sit if energy remains — not a second hard headland. Exit with daylight spare.

Parking & access tips

  • Confirm signed access on official NPWS track page.
  • Arrive with water already filled — do not assume trailhead taps.
  • Pay day entry where required; re-check live fee.

Skip if short on time / energy

  • Seal Rocks same afternoon
  • Full Mungo walking track 21 km after Yacaaba
  • Ferry circuit “for fun” after a hard climb
  • Starting after 11 am in midsummer heat without a hard reverse clock

Extra tips

Who this plan is for

  • Fit walkers who want coastal elevation
  • Groups who will honour a turnaround time
  • Visitors who already did easy lake walks or will do them another day

Decision gates

  • If Park Alerts show closure: cancel — do not improvise off-track
  • If heat is extreme: start earlier or switch to Mungo Rainforest
  • If anyone is struggling mid-climb: reverse immediately
  • If wind makes rock unsafe: reverse

What success looks like

  • Safe return with water margin
  • One honest Grade 4 headland story
  • No same-day stacking of other hard walks

  • Yacaaba Headland walking trackHarder coastal headland walk (Grade 4) with elevation, wind and slippery rock possible. Treat as a committed coastal day, not a casual add-on after the rainforest loop. Re-check open/closed status on NSW National Parks before you go.
  • Mungo Rainforest walkShort coastal rainforest loop from the northern end of Mungo Brush campground — plum pine, mock olive and coogera character that feels nothing like an open beach day. Easy logistics once you are already at Bombah Broadwater; still needs park entry, sensible footwear and a check of local alerts.
