Seal Rocks coast (illustrative)

xAI Imagine · AI-generated · illustrative

Seal Rocks and Sugarloaf Point are the ocean side of Myall Lakes — not the same as a Mungo Brush camp day. Plan parking first, then heritage paths, then one optional headland.

Whale season interest roughly May–November can mean more people at lookouts; sightings are never guaranteed.

Lighthouse cottages are official NPWS heritage bookings only — not a casual walk-up stay.

Drive time from Mungo Brush or The Grandis is real. Stacking rainforest + Grandis + Treachery in one day is a classic first-visit failure mode.

Vehicle entry where required is listed at $8 per vehicle per day (re-check live). Limited reception inland of village edges — prepare maps offline.

Track status, weather and closures change — verify on NSW National Parks before you leave, then use the timeline below as a planning skeleton only.

Timeline

  1. Night before

    Early start plan

Check wind, local alerts, and a hard reverse time. Pack water, wind layer, grip shoes. Decide: lighthouse precinct first, optional Treachery Headland second only if energy remains.

  2. 0:00–1:00

    Drive and parking

Seal Rocks Road from the Pacific Highway / Bulahdelah–Forster corridor. Arrive early on fine weekends. Do not block emergency access or dune edges. Pay any required day entry.

  3. 1:00–3:00

    Sugarloaf Point Lighthouse precinct

Allowed paths only. Barriers exist for a reason. Confirm any day-use rules on NPWS. Heritage cottages are official booking only — look, do not assume walk-up stays.

  4. 3:00–5:00

    Optional headland walk

Treachery Headland or similar only if heat and legs allow — verify track status on the official page. Wet rock and wind are real. Supervise children near cliffs.

  5. 5:00–6:00

    Village buffer

Food, toilets, shade at Seal Rocks area. Check how the least energetic person is doing before inventing another stop.

  6. 6:00+

    Exit before dark

Skip inventing a late Mungo Brush rainforest finish. Holiday highway joins punish late departures. Note whale-season parking lessons for next time.

Parking & access tips

  • Peak weekend parking fills — arrive early.
  • Seal Rocks Road is the main road in; do not cut through dunes.
  • Pay applicable park entry where required — re-check live fee and payment method.
  • Never leave bags visible in cars at busy lookouts.

Skip if short on time / energy

  • Mungo Brush full rainforest + lake day stacked after lighthouse peak
  • Bombah Point ferry circuit the same afternoon
  • The Grandis as a “quick add-on” after 3 pm
  • Yacaaba Grade 4 on the same calendar day for first-timers
  • Night finish on unfamiliar coastal roads without lights and buffer

Extra tips

Who this plan is for

  • Ocean-day visitors who want lighthouse heritage and headland air
  • Whale-season lookout crowds who will still reverse if parking fails
  • Groups happy if lighthouse precinct alone becomes the whole day in heat

Decision gates

  • If car parks are full: shorten to a lookout you can walk to safely, or leave and return later — do not invent illegal roadside parks
  • If wind is extreme on cliffs: skip optional headland; keep barrier-aware lighthouse paths only
  • If anyone is heat-distressed: village shade and exit — no “one more headland”
  • If the group suggests Mungo after 3 pm: say no

What success looks like

  • Safe parking and exit
  • One clear ocean-headland or lighthouse story
  • No cliff-edge photo stunts
  • Notes for a future lake-base day at Mungo Brush
