Lakes + beaches weekend
Best for: Weekend campers and gateway-town stayers
Guide updated · verify NSW National Parks the morning you go
Two-day shape: camp or stay in a gateway town, rainforest and lake on day one, coast or Grandis on day two — leave room for holiday crowds.

Weekend success is two solid plans, not five half-finished drives. Book NPWS camping early for school holidays, or use Tea Gardens / Hawks Nest / Seal Rocks / Bulahdelah stays (commercial booking — park entry still separate).
Limited reception means trip intention and Emergency+ matter more than “we will just call if we are late.”
Day one protects Mungo Brush. Day two picks ONE of: Seal Rocks / Sugarloaf, The Grandis, or Dark Point respectful coastal — not all three.
Fees: day entry listed $8/vehicle/day (re-check); camping separate; ferry only if day two needs it (cash, 8am–6pm, wind risk).
Track status, weather and closures change — verify on NSW National Parks before you leave, then use the timeline below as a planning skeleton only.
Timeline
Before the weekend
Bookings and offline prep
NPWS camp booking confirmed or commercial stay booked. Emergency+ installed. Offline maps. Water plan for self-sufficient camping. Fuel stove if camping (generators prohibited).
Day 1 morning–afternoon
Mungo Brush core
Camp check-in (NPWS only) or day visit + Rainforest loop + lake. Early night. No late Seal Rocks invent-on-the-fly.
Day 1 evening
Recovery and next-day choice
Honest vote: ocean day (Seal Rocks), tall-tree picnic (Grandis), or Dark Point respectful coastal. Check alerts and weather for the pick.
Day 2
One hero only
Either Seal Rocks / Sugarloaf OR The Grandis OR Dark Point — not all three. Optional ferry only if that hero needs it and cash/hours/wind work.
Exit
Before peak return traffic
School holidays punish late Pacific Highway joins. Leave with water and fuel margin. Note what to repeat next trip.

Parking & access tips
- Book camps early via official NPWS system or 1300 072 757.
- NRMA Myall Shores is commercial — separate booking; park entry may still apply.
- Peak holiday parking at Seal Rocks and Mungo fills — early starts both days.
- Never leave valuables visible at trailheads or campgrounds.
Skip if short on time / energy
- Trying ferry + Seal Rocks + Grandis + long beach drive in one day
- Full 21 km Mungo walking track for first-timers
- Yacaaba Grade 4 plus ocean day without recovery
- Broughton Island without boat competence and official arrangements
Extra tips
Who this plan is for
- Weekend visitors with one or two nights
- Groups who will protect sleep and water
- Campers using official NPWS sites only
Decision gates
- If Day 1 empties the tank: Day 2 becomes Grandis picnic or rest, not Yacaaba
- If camp booking fails: gateway town stay — do not free-camp invent
- If fire bans or flood alerts: shrink plans to open, safe options only
- If ferry is on Day 2 list: cash + wind Plan B required
What success looks like
- Two completed stories (lake + one other), not five half-starts
- Bookings and fees handled without stress
- Everyone exits with margin for highway traffic

- Mungo Rainforest walkShort coastal rainforest loop from the northern end of Mungo Brush campground — plum pine, mock olive and coogera character that feels nothing like an open beach day. Easy logistics once you are already at Bombah Broadwater; still needs park entry, sensible footwear and a check of local alerts.
- Dark Point walking trackCoastal walking toward Dark Point Aboriginal Place — Worimi significance. Visit respectfully, stay on allowed routes, and do not invent cultural detail or climb restricted areas. Views toward Broughton Island are a landscape highlight when weather is clear.
- Treachery Headland walking trackHeadland walking near the Seal Rocks / Sugarloaf Point coastal precinct. Confirm current track status on NPWS. Natural pairing with the lighthouse heritage stop when crowds and heat allow — still one primary goal for the day.
